The Floorsense sensor acts as a proximity sensor to determine if a person is sitting at a workstation. These sensors are typically placed below a desk, in which the area covered will typically be a person’s legs, or if the desk is at a standing height will detect lower legs and foot presence. An intelligent algorithm is used to distinguish between transient movement and actual presence.

This is illustrated in the diagram above, which shows the side and top views of the sensor placement. The floorsense sensor communicates the occupancy state with a slave controller via a low frequency resilient mesh radio network built by the floorsense installers.

These sensors are typically paired (without their radio antennas) with the Floorsight modules via an Auxiliary cable, but they can be installed without them for the sole purpose of occupancy detection. This is particularly useful for places such as meeting rooms where 2 or more people gather in one large desk.
